“Skater oasis” is a collaborate interaction artwork, which recreates the pool backyard atmosphere for skaters to enjoy their moment and experience together.
“skater oasis” encourages users to sit together, play together. When the users sit on the bench, the sensor will trigger, and the corresponding light effect would be activated. The concept complies with three stages: invitation, exploration, and immersion. When the first user interacts with the artwork, he/she explore how this artwork works. Meanwhile the user realizes this is a collaborate interaction. Then he/she will invite someone to join and explore for effect. Those steps will repeat as long as there are three users interact with the artwork and trigger the final outcome.
User Research & Site observation
For a better understanding of how users interact and utilize the park, it’s necessary to take time to do the quantitative observation to understand the users. Therefore, I visit the part at different times, to capture some details of skaters and other users’ movement and behavior. The purpose of doing that is to ensure the users are what we thought they are. More importantly, to seek the potential opportunity for design.
Design thinking methology: Mapping Space
The following visual map will show the qualities of the site, how users utilized, what common pathways and flows are and what volume the users occupy within that.
Instead of conducting interviews or questionnaires with many participants, I created a video portrait of a single user of a skatepark. The portrait is somewhere in between an interview and a physical demonstration. The aim is to discover what that person does at the skatepark, and why.
Iterative design process
After analysing the data from backgroud and user research, I filter and narrow down few ideas to a single concept. Use images, sketches, personas and storyboards to describe the core idea and the aesthetic intent using.
User Testing & Heuristic evaluation
The user evaluation aims at how well the users understand the concept, what’s the interaction means to them, and which part of the design they think can be improved. The user group is the skaters and spectators in this skatepark. I use questionnaire, interview, and product reaction card as the evaluation method.
Questionnaire is design for collecting users feedback on the project straightforward. There are some questions regard to how they understand and how they interact with the project.
Furthermore in the interview, I asked the users a few open-ended question, to collect more useful information in depth.
Product reaction card allows users to pick five words that best describe the project. the purpose of doing that is to know how the users first impression of the project. It will give me some feedback on the project’s appearance and the interaction system.
Movement observation and user observation were conducted to get the hidden feedback from the user when they are interacting with the project. I recorded their verbal behaviours and non-verbal behaviours, includes their movement, action and expression.
